We have researched the quality of other paternity testing companies advertising online, and the laboratory standards vary.
- Some testing companies offer DNA testing with “patented” probes, meaning the test procedures have not been tested and proven by leading scientists in the industry.
- Many paternity test companies stop at state minimum laboratory standards—99% probability, for example. This probability means that the alleged father cannot be excluded as the father. However, it also means that there is a 1 in 100 chance of another man in the same race population being the father, so it is not very conclusive.
- Some testing takes place in university settings (look for website addresses containing “university” or “.edu”), using state grants and research students.
- Yet other DNA paternity testing takes place in Canada and other countries, where there may be inferior-quality laboratory standards.
