Our laboratory’s ABI Prism® 3100 genetic analyzers help us perform numerous DNA tests every day. They are responsible for capillary analysis, one of the most vital steps in DNA testing.
Capillary analysis follows the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the DNA testing process. It involves the examination of the DNA strands produced during PCR, taking note of the sizes and types of the DNA markers.
The ABI Prism® 3100 has 16 capillaries, allowing our laboratory to analyze 16 DNA samples at a time per machine. This capacity to examine dozens of samples simultaneously gives Prophase Genetics the advantage of being able to quickly complete our DNA tests (for paternity tests, within 5 working days of receiving all the samples in the lab).
Once the ABI Prism® 3100 genetic analyzers have produced the data about the DNA samples, our laboratory’s professional DNA analysts examine the data and perform statistical calculations on them. These calculations are what produce the final results for our paternity and other family relationship DNA tests.
