To start the testing process, you will need to order a collection kit from Prophase Genetics to be sent to your home. You may order a kit using our online order form or you can call us at 1-800-DNA-1840 for more information. Once you make the first call, the rest is as easy as 1-2-3.
Step 1: Collecting the Sample
We need to obtain a sample of your DNA in order to complete the paternity test. When you order a test, we will send you a sample collection kit. We need to analyze samples from at least the child and the alleged father. We prefer, but do not require, the mother to take part in the paternity testing process.
If necessary, the samples for the tested individuals can be collected at different times and places. It is not unusual for individuals to be in different states, or even in different countries. Please let us know when you order a test if you need to test people in different locations.
Prophase Genetics uses buccal swabs to collect your DNA for testing. A buccal swab is rubbed up and down on the inside of the cheek of your mouth to collect loose cheek cells. Our buccal swabs are non-invasive and are even gentle enough for newborn babies.
Our sample collection kit contains the following:
- Sterile Dacron Synthetic Swabs- Though they appear similar, these are not ordinary cotton Q-Tips. They are specially designed to ensure proper collection of your DNA for paternity testing. The polyester made by Dacron provides a constant surface for DNA extraction, proving better than many other brands and types of Q-Tips.
- Swab Storage Envelopes- It is important to provide a dry environment for shipping your swabs to our DNA testing laboratory because of the bacteria in all our mouths. Unlike plastic storage bags that trap humidity, our storage envelopes will resist mold that could damage your DNA sample and distort paternity test results.
- Easy-to-Complete Forms- For your convenience, we provide step-by-step instructions for DNA collection and easy-to-complete forms.
- Pre-Paid Return Envelope- The cost of the collection kit is included in the $165 test fee.
